That's an early conclusion I can make.Huhu..
Lemme tell u all about what I've been doing since I entered Paediatrics posting.
It has been 2 weeks since I entered this posting.I got a retired (?) supervisor who is still keen to teach us.She is well known to be so fierce to her students ( I don't know, some of them said this, and some disagreed)..
And I...
Disagreed !!
When we had our meeting for the first time, she was so enthusiastic about teaching us on how to become good doctors.I,for some reasons, was so inspired by her motivational words.I told myself to study harder than when I was studying Orthopaedics. And I liked her (notice the d?? ).
But after some teachings,hmmm... (currently)I won't say that I don't like her. It's just,I felt quite burdened with abundant learning issues.I must admit that this is also relatively caused by a programme which I am currently involved in.While ensuring that this programme will succeed, I am also tired coz I don't have enough time to read books (here,in medicine,u have to read books at least once a day,in average) n that requires determination and sufficient perseverance to achieve the visions to becoming 5-star-doctors..
During the teachings,we have discussed many interesting cases in the wards .I was also ecstatic to know that we were posted for the first 2 weeks to HKL.Here, there were so many things to learn and many rare cases(as stated in the textbooks) can be found here.I guessed that shows how big their responsibility is to treat rare cases which only happen once in 10000 people for instance, and how renown HKL is for their best treatments and specialties. For example, there were many surgeries which are provided in HKL that I didn't find in HUKM such as liver transplant. There were also many cases which I could not find the diagnosis in the textbooks or even in the internet !!
However,I still love HUKM, I really do !! And from what I've seen,in contrast to what people say, that HKL is a lot busier than HUKM, I choose to disagree !! Coz in my experience,I saw house officers sleeping in the Staff Room whenever possible and they did not look busy.I wonder why.Compared to HUKM,although it's a teaching hospital (here medical students can help them to complete some procedures),I can see that house officers are always busy with their blood sampling, procedures,ABSIs,clinics (if there's insufficient MO or registrar in the clinic),discharge summary, reading x-rays and etc.And not to say, staff nurses in HKL were even more relaxed.Every time I entered the Staff Room to take books, there will always be at least 1 nurse who will either be eating, chatting among themselves, seeing catalogues?? and even eating rojak u know??
Hmm..I don't feel like telling u more about that..
But all I can say is if I were to choose where I want to pursue my Master to become a specialist, I would rather choose HUKM than going overseas. ( up to now,I'm thinking this way)
What hurt my group the most was when Prof said " I'm dissapointed" ..Huhu..felt so guilty.I thought we have tried our best to take history as complete as possible. However, there's always be a hole in that history taken by us.We will never reach her satisfaction,I think.Huhu,I'm so sorry Prof,I'll try harder next time,I will !!
What my prof said :
1. " Don't become a doctor just because it's a glamourous profession"
2. " I wonder why they are training so many doctors now.Back then, they only produced 120 doctors per year with good qualities."
3. " Don't waste people money.Be a benefit to others"
4." Doctors nowadays have weak history taking skills and clinical skill"
5. " Medicine is NEVER simple "
Ouchhh !!
That's the price u have to pay when u chose this profession. There's no turning back.N there's no exact retirement for a doctor.Think about that.
